Funks Grove Pure Maple Sirup
The Funk family has been making pure maple sirup from the trees of Funks Grove for six generations, since the days before Route 66 was established. But like many other businesses, Funks Grove Pure Maple Sirup grew to depend on the steady stream of customers that Route 66 brought to its door. Today, the sirup farm at Funks Grove, located about 12 miles south of Bloomington, remains a favorite stop among Route 66 travelers. Pure maple sirup ("sirup" is the traditional spelling used for the product that results from the boiling down of sap, without the addition of extra sugar) has no added ingredients or preservatives—just maple sap boiled down to remove water until it becomes sirup. Their pure maple sugar, candy, and cream also have no added ingredients but are simply the result of further boiling, cooling, and stirring of the maple sirup to different degrees. In 2020, the shop added a new item to their line-up: maple ice cream made from whole cream and maple sirup by Kirby Family Creamery, which is operated by Lisa Kirby, a Funk family member who works in the sirup shop.
The sirup shop also carries a wide range of Funks Grove and Route 66 memorabilia as well as products made from crops grown in Funks Grove by a new farm operated by Jonathan Funk and Katie Funk, representing the sixth generation of the family, along with Katie’s husband, Jeff Hake. Funks Grove Heritage Fruits & Grains is a nine-acre farm growing a variety of fruits (apples, peaches, pears, cherries, currants, and grapes) and grains (wheat, corn, popcorn, buckwheat, and barley), many of which are heritage or heirloom varieties. With these crops they produce value-added products such as baking mixes and fruit leather that include Funks Grove pure maple sirup and sugar.
This historic and beautiful stop on Route 66 is the midway point of Route 66 in Illinois and has been an official Route 66 landmark since 2003. They are open seasonally, usually from early March through late August.
